Raja Shivaji Movie Review: Historical dramas based on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj always carry high expectations, especially in Maharashtra, where his legacy is deeply respected. 

Many shows and movies tried to capture his image over the years. But a few of them succeed in leaving a lasting impression on the audience. Riteish Deshmukh also attempts to perform the same task with Raja Shivaji as he brings one of the most popular and historical heroes to life on a grand scale. Has he succeeded in doing it? The film aims to balance spectacle with the story as it is mounted on a high budget and passionate support. Although it succeeds in delivering the moments of pride and excitement, it also struggles with consistency and depth.

Raja Shivaji Movie Review: Story

The movie is set in the 17th century, when the Mughal Empire under Shah Jahan tried to dominate across India before Shivaji’s birth. Meanwhile, the Adil Shahi and Nizam Shahi dynasties were ruling the southern region of the country. The story introduces the early life of Shivaji amid the chaos and political tension. 

 

Shivaji grows up under the guidance of his mother, Jijabai. She ignited the fire of Swarajya in Shivaji’s mind. As he matures, he starts his mission by capturing important forts like Torna and Kondhana to build his influence and challenge established powers. 

The big parts of the story revolve around the growing tension between Shivaji and the formidable Bijapur general Afzal Khan. Their emotional confrontation is the emotional and dramatic high point of the film. 

The story tries to showcase Shivaji as a warrior and a leader who cares deeply about justice and the welfare of the common people. 

Raja Shivaji Movie Review: Performance

Riteish Deshmukh delivers a sincere performance as Shivaji. He gives intensity in some scenes, especially during the action scenes and emotional confrontations. Meanwhile, his screen presence does not always match the large image of Shivaji. Some of his dialogue and expressions also feel repetitive.

Sanjay Dutt also stands out with his commanding presence as Afzal Khan. His voice, body language, and overall performance made him a convincing villain. 

Abhishek Bachchan also appears as Sambhaji Bhosale with sincerity. But his dialogue delivery usually feels inconsistent. Meanwhile, Genelia D'Souza as Saibai struggles with an accent issue. It also affects the authenticity of her performance.  

Despite her talent, Vidya Balan is also underutilised because she doesn’t get enough space to make a strong impact. However, Sachin Khedekar and Bhagyashree deliver one of the best performances, especially Bhagyashree, who was impressive as Jijabai.  

Salman Khan’s cameo also deserves special appreciation as he adds a massy punch in the conclusion.

Raja Shivaji Movie Review: Technical

The film has a mixed result on the technical performance. Santosh Sivan captures the scale and grandeur effectively through his cinematography because many frames stand out for their visual appeal. 

Editing could have been tightened. As the runtime of more than 3 hours, the film feels stretched. And a few sequences were dragged more than necessary. 

Ajay-Atul’s background score is one of the strongest aspects of the Raja Shivaji movie review. The Shivaji anthem, especially, plays an important role in boosting the key moments and enhancing the emotional impact. 

What’s Work Well?

• Its emotional high points are one of the biggest strengths of the film. The climax is engaging and gives the kind of cinematic payoff the audience wants from such movies. 
• The film also succeeds in creating moments of pride. 
• The attempt to show Shivaji as more than a warrior is also a great aspect of the film. Some scenes highlight his concern for justice and the well-being of his people.

What Could Have Been Improved?

Despite its strength, the film also struggles in some parts. Check the top weakness of Raja Shivaji review below: 

• The pacing is the biggest issue of the film, as the first half feels slow and stretched. Many scenes could have been trimmed. 
• The storytelling usually depends on the television-drama style due to exaggerated dialogue and staging. 
• Limited exploration of Shivaji’s ideology is also a major setback. Although the film celebrates his bravery brilliantly, it doesn’t fully capture the depth of his vision. 
• Character development is also inconsistent, as many characters didn’t get the proper screen time or depth. 

Raja Shivaji Movie Review: Verdict

Passion and ambition are the main elements of Raja Shivaji. It gives moments of evoking pride and excitement, especially in the climax. But struggles to maintain the same impact throughout its long runtime. 

Although Riteish Deshmukh shows promise as a director, the film highlights areas like pacing and storytelling that could have been improved. The film still gives strong moments to make it enjoyable to watch for those who love Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
