Patriot movie review: Patriot is one of the most anticipated movies in Malayalam cinema because it marks the reunion of Mammootty and Mohanlal under the direction of Mahesh Narayanan. 

Apart from the much-talked-about reunion, the film also stars Fahadh Faasil and Nayanthara in major roles. Despite having power cast, Patriot 2026 refuses to become a star-driven showpiece. Instead, it remains connected to its subjects: surveillance, data privacy, and the misuse of technology.

The story starts with Dr Daniel James (Mammootty), as he is a scientific analyst who works with a government agency. He mysteriously found disturbing evidence about a surveillance system that is being used to monitor civilians through their personal devices. It starts as a professional concern that converts into a personal battle when he is falsely accused and forced to go on the run. 

Daniel flies abroad and starts exposing the truth through digital platforms. Meanwhile, the situation becomes more dangerous as he dives deeper. This happens because he is fighting against the powerful political and corporate forces instead of technology. 

A private company managing a controversial surveillance app is the centre of this conflict. Its leadership and influential political connections make an unescapable web of control.  The story also moves across different locations and introduces many parallel tracks. Each character, including government officials and insiders of the company, adds another layer to the central conflicts. 

Its focus on real issues also makes the movie more engaging because the film asks the audience to follow conversations, decode information, and understand the stakes. Meanwhile. It is also a minus point for those who want a more easy-to-understand narrative.

The ensemble cast is one of the biggest strengths of Patriot 2026, as each actor has contributed to the film’s grounded tone. 

Mammootty delivers a composed and controlled performance as Daniel James. He has the emotional and narrative weight of the film as a man stuck between duty and survival. His performance doesn’t include unnecessary dramatics. It made the overall story more engaging. 

Fahadh Faasil plays the antagonist with subtle intensity. He depends on body language and sharp dialogue delivery to create a sense of unease. On top of that, his performance becomes especially impactful in the 2nd portion as his character’s motivations are explored deeply at that moment. 

Mohanlal also appears as Colonel Rahim Naik in a limited and important role. He left a lasting impression despite a shorter screen time. His presence also gives depth to the story, especially when the film explores loyalty and friendship. 

Kunchacko Boban also delivers sincere efforts as he brings an emotional weight to his character. Similarly, Darshana Rajendran, Revathi, and other supporting actors play their parts effectively. But some roles look underdeveloped. 

The biggest disappointment comes through Nayanthara’s role because her character has potential. But it is not fully explored throughout the movie.

Patriot movie Malayalam maintains consistent visuals and tonal identity. The cinematography is focused on more realism than visual spectacle. The camera also ignores glamour and stays grounded even when the story moves abroad. 

On top of that, the background score also supports the narrative without overpowering it. It creates tension in important moments and stays gentle elsewhere to let the silence enhance the overall experience. 

Editing also plays an essential role in managing different storylines. Although the first half feels tightly structured, the second half occasionally struggles in pacing. Some scenes might have been trimmed to make the overall experience better. 

Though action scenes are limited in Patriot, they are also important to make the narrative engaging.  The aircraft sequence and a confined-space confrontation are some of the standout moments. But some action blocks don’t have the needed intensity and precision. 

What Works Well?

The following are the major plus points of the Patriot movie review:

• The film’s commitment to its subject is its biggest strength. It handles data privacy and surveillance in a relevant manner. 
• The writing keeps the audience engaged through layered storytelling and character-driven drama, especially in the first half. The best thing about writing is that it creates tension through its dialogue instead of major action scenes. 
• As mentioned above, performance is the biggest strength of the Patriot movie Malayalam. Mammotty and Fahad Faasil especially give depth to their roles. 
• Apart from performance, the film also deserves credit for avoiding unwanted commercial elements.

What Could Have Been Improved

Apart from its strengths, Patriot 2026 has a few minus points. Check some of them below:

• The film also struggles to balance its identity because it moves between a socio-political drama and a spy thriller. A clearer focus may have helped the story feel more detailed.
