Karuppu Tamil Movie Review: After facing release delays, financial hurdles, and massive online buzz, Karuppu finally hit the theatres with huge expectations from Suriya’s fans. The film blends courtroom drama, fantasy, emotion, and commercial elements under the direction of RJ Balaji.

Released as Veerabhadrudu in Telugu, the movie has already sparked mixed reactions online. Although the story has much depth, it struggles to deliver on its promise. Do you want to know why? Keep reading our Karuppu Tamil Movie Review.

Karuppu Tamil Movie Review: Story

Karuppu follows a poor father and daughter who arrive from Kerala for the daughter’s medical treatment. Their gold jewellery, which is meant to fund her surgery, gets stolen. Although the police recovered the jewelry immediately, the family faces numerous legal complications in trying to reclaim it through the court.

A corrupt lawyer named Baby Kannan controls the court system with his political support and fear. He keeps exploiting the family instead of helping them. Their cases continuously get postponed while innocent people suffer.

The grieving father moves towards praying to Lord Karuppu Saamy for justice. After that, superstar Suriya enters the narrative as Karuppu, a lawyer determined to fight against the corruption, Saravanan.

The movie battle between divine justice and human greed becomes the main conflict of the story. Emotional moments, mass elevations, and strong buildup sequences keep the audience engaged during the first half. Meanwhile, the film slowly loses its grip on its grounded emotional core when the supernatural portions emerge.

Suriya Commands Attention With Strong Screen Presence

As expected,  Suriya is undoubtedly the biggest attraction of Veerabhadrudu or Karuppa. Fans will definitely enjoy seeing him in different shades throughout the film. He reminds viewers of his iconic cop roles as a lawyer and a divine figure. His screen presence keeps many scenes entertaining even when the writing struggles.

His intense expressions, stylish slow-motion shots, action scenes, and powerful dialogues are among the reasons behind the energy. The character still lacks depth in some areas. The script focuses more on elevating the hero than creating the story in the second half.

Besides Suriya, RJ Balaji also delivered a lengthy performance as Baby Kannan. His role is exaggerated and stays entertaining in some parts. He plays a greedy and manipulative lawyer convincingly. But his character seems louder than necessary.

Trisha Krishnan also gets decent screen time and performs well as another lawyer.  Indrans and Anagha Maya Ravi also left a more memorable experience than expected. They deliver one of the film’s best performances with natural emotion and heartbreaking vulnerability.

Technical Brilliance Mixed With Formula Writing

The film also looks rich and stylish visually. Cinematographer G. K. Vishnu also uses strong red and dark tones to create an engaging atmosphere. Many scenes also suit the film’s tone as they carry a dramatic mass appeal.

The action scenes are also choreographed brilliantly, especially in slow-motion because they add excitement on the big screen. Sai Abhyankkar’s background score also works effectively during the elevation scenes. But the score becomes excessively loud sometimes.

The songs do not leave a lasting impression, however. Music feels underwhelming compared to the scale of the film.

RJ Balaji also deserves credit for trying a different commercial entertainer with fantasy elements and courtroom drama. The concept had a strong potential, especially during the first half. But the movie slowly slips into a familiar mass-movie environment filled with predictable scenes and exaggerated writing.

What Works Best In Karuppu

Karuppu delights fans with many plus points. Check the top positive points of Karuppu Tamil Movie Review below:

  • Its emotional moments are one of the biggest strengths of Karuppu Tamil Movie Review. The father-daughter moments genuinely create sympathy.
  • The 1st half maintains the strong pace with courtroom conflicts, emotional drama, and mystery surrounding the divine intervention. Some scenes also combine humour, action, and social commentary.
  • Suriya’s mass moments are another major plus point. On top of that, the movie has surprises for Suriya’s fans as it has a reference to his previous films.
  • The visual presentation and theatrical moments engaged the fans throughout its runs.

Where The Film Struggles

Despite having plus points, the movie also has some flaws. Below are the top negatives of Karuppu Tamil Movie Review:

  • The second half is the biggest issue with this film.
  • Important scenes become disappointing because many lawyers behave like gangsters.
  • The conflict between Baby Kannan and Saravanan later turns repetitive after impressing in the initial stage.
  • Instead of focusing on the main plot, the movie shifts its focus to elevating Suriya’s character.
  • The climax also feels rushed and incomplete. It has left room for the sequel.

Karuppu Tamil Movie Review: Verdict

The Karuppu begins with an interesting concept and delivers an entertaining first half. Meanwhile, it struggles to maintain consistency after the interval. The impact of the unique idea gets reduced because of the excessive hero elevation, weak writing choices, and unrealistic courtroom drama.

The film still offers enough entertainment for Suriya’s fans. But viewers will be disappointed if they expect a tightly written courtroom fantasy drama.

Rating: 3/5
