Salman Khan’s upcoming film Battle of Galwan is now titled Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace, and director Apoorva Lakhia says the change reflects the film’s deeper focus on humanity, sacrifice, and peace.
The upcoming war drama of Salman Khan has made a big change that instantly caught fans’ attention. It was earlier introduced as Battle Of Galwan. Now, it has been retitled as Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace.
The change was announced on March 16, 2026, along with a fresh poster. Director Apoorva Lakhia has now shared why the makers moved away from Battle of Galwan as the final title.

Why Battle Of Galwan Was Changed
Apoorva Lakhia revealed to HTCity that the change was not a sudden call. He said both titles had been registered from the start. Slowly, the team realised the film’s emotional core was bigger than one military clash.
Lakhia explained that the story speaks about humanity, empathy, sacrifice, and the silent struggles soldiers carry, which made Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace feel closer to the film’s soul.
That explanation was necessary because many fans were still seeing it through the lens of Battle of Galwan, a title that directly pointed to the 2020 Galwan Valley clash. Now, the new name shifts the mood. It sounds like a battlefield chronicle and more like a film about loss, service, and peace.
The Message Behind The New Title
Lakhia also said that the new name has the emotion and sacrifice in a more truthful way. He added that the film includes a song with the same name. The response to that song also helped the makers feel they were heading in the right direction. Watch that song below:
The new poster supports that shift, too. It presents Salman Khan in an intense, wounded look. However, the title and tagline aim to frame the film as more than a war spectacle. The makers are pitching it as a story about what soldiers endure, not just what they fight.
Why The Film Is Already Being Watched Closely
The buzz around the title change is also tied to the subject itself. The film is inspired by the Galwan Valley clash of June 15, 2020, when Indian and Chinese troops were involved in one of the most serious confrontations between the two countries in decades. Twenty Indian soldiers were killed in that clash.
Due to that background, Battle of Galwan was always going to be more than just another film title. The subject has political, military, and emotional weight. Reports showed that the Ministry of External Affairs kept its distance from the project, stating that film-related matters are handled by the relevant authorities and that the MEA has no role in such ventures.
Battle Of Galwan Release Date
When the Battle of Galwan was first discussed, it was expected to hit theatres on April 17, 2026. However, the latest reports suggest that the release plan may have changed,
Some media outlets are saying it could now arrive in August, possibly around the Independence Day window. Also, the newly released poster did not carry the earlier April date, which has only added to the speculation.
That means the film is now in the news for two reasons at once:
- Battle of Galwan is no longer the official title
- The release date may also be shifting from April to August

Final words
