SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi is becoming one of the most awaited movies in development. Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran are set to lead it. The film is scheduled to hit the theatres on April 7, 2027.
Composer MM Keeravani has now reportedly confirmed that the movie features six songs. He also shared an important update regarding Varanasi's background score.
Varanasi Will Have Six Songs
123Telugu’s report suggests that MM Keeravani recently spoke about Varanasi’s music in a public appearance. He revealed that there will be six songs in the movie. It means that music is going to play an important role in SS Rajamouli’s next big project.
Keeravani may start work on the background score in September 2026. He could also finish the work by January 2027, a few months before Varanasi’s theatrical release.
The audience's interest in the movie is already high due to the collaboration of Keeravani and Rajamouli. They’ve worked together in several successful projects previously. RRR and the Baahubali series are their previous collaborations.
This is why music could be one of the most successful areas in Varanasi.
Mahesh Babu Plays Rudhra
Its story is set in the year 2027. It also offers a combination of mythology, science fiction, and adventure. The plot reportedly focuses on the danger of potentially devastating consequences because a massive asteroid named Shambhavi heads towards Varanasi.
Mahesh Babu plays a rugged archaeologist and explorer, Rudrha. His character is hired for a dangerous mission involving an ancient cosmic artifact. He travels to different parts of the world to discover the reality behind the artifacts.
Priyanka Chopra Jonas also joins him as a skilled historian of weapons, Mandakini. She would be another important character during the adventure.

Prithviraj Sukumaran As The Antagonist
Prithviraj Sukumaran will play a main villain in the story, Kumbha. His character would be a major obstacle in Rudra’s journey as a highly intelligent tech expert.
Several international locations may be seen in Varanasi. The jungles of Africa, Antarctica, and various parts of Europe are some of the top locations where the shooting is reportedly happening.
The relation between the futuristic settings and ancient mythology is an interesting part. The story explores the idea that the future catastrophe may be hidden in Varanasi’s past.
Ramayana Episode To Feature Mahesh Babu As Lord Rama?
There could be a Ramayana sequence in Varanasi. It may reportedly focus on the battle of Lord Ram and Kumbhakaran.
Mahesh Babu is said to play Lord Ram in this sequence. The Vanara Sena and Lord Hanuman may also be seen in this portion of the movie.
Reports also hint that Sita and Ravana will not appear in this Varanasi sequence because the entire episode may focus on the Kumbhakaran-Ram battle. The makers, however, haven’t confirmed this Ramayana sequence yet. This kind of information about the Ramayana portion should hence be treated only as a report.

Varanasi Release Date And Production Update
Varanasi is now scheduled to release on April 7, 2027. Extensive visual effects and multiple shooting schedules are currently underway. The shoot is reportedly planned to wrap up by October 2026.
The team will start working on VFX, editing, music, and the background score after the production is completed. As MM Keeravani is planning to start working on music and background score, the coming months may reveal more details related to the film’s production.
As Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj Sukumaran are sharing screens under S. S. Rajamouli, the project has already created huge excitement among the Indian audience.
The combination of science fiction, mythology, international adventure, and a large-scale production has made it one of the most awaited Indian movies in 2027.
