Legal Team Raises Concerns Over Defamatory Claims

Naga Chaitanya’s advocate, Vaibhav Gaggar, informed the court that several websites were allegedly using Chaitanya’s name with explicit search terms to attract traffic and boost online visibility.

His legal team further argued that several posts, videos, and online discussions have falsely portrayed Naga as being responsible for the breakdown of his marriage with Samantha Ruth Prabhu.  Some content also reportedly goes a step further by alleging that he cheated on the actress and negatively impacted her professional career.

His counsel strongly opposed such stories, describing them as defamation and harmful to his public image.

His lawyer said, “This is trolling, this is not fair criticism,” while referring to the online circulated content.

Personality Rights Become A Key Issue In The Case

Personality rights have once again caught the headlines. For those unaware, it is a legal concept that protects an individual's name, image, voice, likeness, and other identifiable attributes from unauthorized commercial use.

This matter highlighted the challenges celebrities face related to AI-generated content, deepfake videos, and digital manipulation. Advanced technologies are allegedly being used to create fake content, according to reports. They can mislead the audience and damage anyone’s reputation.

The legal team argued that such materials also affect his privacy, dignity, and personal reputation, besides Chaitanya’s professional standing.

Many celebrities have already secured personality rights amid growing deepfakes and AI-generated content. Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, etc., have successfully defended their personality rights. Kartik Aryan also secured it recently to protect his identity from being misused.

It highlights the growing concern over personality rights in recent years.

Court Observes Limits To Public Scrutiny

Justice Jyoti Singh heard the matter in the court. She acknowledged that public figures often face a greater degree of scrutiny than normal people. The court, however, also said that there are limits to such exposures.

The court said during the proceedings, “You are in public life, you are certainly more vulnerable than the rest of the people, but it has its limitations.”

The court reportedly also has issued a summons in the case, and an interim order aimed at securing personality rights may be considered. The next hearing is now on September 30.

The case emerges when concerns related to AI-generated content and deepfakes are becoming highlighted in the entertainment world. Celebrities have increasingly raised concerns about the unauthorized use of their identities in manipulated videos, advertisements, and online content.

The result may contribute to the ongoing tensions around digital identity protection and the legal boundaries around personality rights in India.
