Jeethu Joseph Reveals The Real Inspiration Behind Drishyam
During a recent interview with Aashirvad Cinemas while promoting Drishyam 3, Jeethu Joseph shared the real-life incident behind the inspiration of the original. He said that the idea for the film came from the conflict involving a boy and a girl, which turned into a police case.
"I got this idea from a disagreement between two families. An issue between a boy and a girl. It then becomes a police case. There is a dialogue that a person told me during the discussion. Both families are right and wrong. The confusion is about who to side with. That guy knew both families," he said.
He also revealed that it happened in 2000, before he entered the film industry. Someone told him that both families were wrong and right in their own ways during that time. That statement stayed with him for years and later became the base for the Drishyam franchise.
He further explained that he became curious about how the audience would react to such a morally complicated situation if it were shown in a film. He wondered whether they would become divided into two families or simply support one.
"I hadn't been to the cinema that day. It was in 2000. If such a situation happened in the theatre, there was doubt as to who the audience would side with. Their minds would be wandering here and there. Drishyam emerged from such thinking," says Jeethu about the birth of Drishyam.
After that, he opened up about the Jeethu Joseph Drishyam Mistake.
The Jeethu Joseph Drishyam Mistake That Still Bothers Him
While speaking about the film, Jeethu Joseph also admitted that his original intention didn’t work well on the screen. He wants the audience to understand both sides equally. But most of the audience stood with Georgekutty and his family after the release of Drishyam.
He accepted that this has become the biggest Jeethu Joseph Drishyam Mistake. He felt that the audience didn’t give equal sympathy to Geetha Prabhakar’s emotions. He said that Geetha Prabhakar was only trying to find out what happened to her missing son.
He stated, “After watching the movie, I realized that I was wrong. Because that balancing act didn't work. Everyone is with George Kutty and his family. If you really think about it, can you blame Geetha Prabhakar? Her own son went missing. She set out to find the truth. Looking at it from this side.”
Joseph also said that she was only fighting for justice and searching for the truth from her point of view. The audience strongly supported Georgekutty despite his manipulation of the police and his attempts to hide the reality.
He added that the emotional connection developed with Georgekutty hides the moral tension he simply wants to present.
He also stated, “George Kutty is manipulating things and taking them away. Will they tolerate it? The son has not confessed to his mother. So she is still not ready to believe it. The mother does not know that it is the truth. On the other hand, it was a mistake made as part of self-defence. She cannot go to the police either. Her mother is the IG, so justice will not be served. There is right and wrong on both sides. This was my first thought for making the film Drishyam."

Why Viewers Connected Deeply With Georgekutty
The emotional bond between Georgekutty and his family was the primary reason behind the success of Drishyam. Mohanlal’s performance made the audience believe that a father is trying to save his loved ones at any cost.
Jeethu Joseph admitted that the audience understands the intention of Georgekutty to protect his family, although he tried to be manipulative and deceptive. He also points out another important layer of the story.
He said that the family didn’t trust the legal system because e Geetha Prabhakar herself was a powerful police officer. It convinced Georgekutty that his family wouldn’t receive fair justice when the truth comes out.
These factors were the primary reasons why the audience supported Georgekutty instead of seeing both sides.
