A Retired Soldier Fighting a Different Battle

The story follows Arjun Maurya (Anil Kapoor), a retired army Subedaar who returns to his hometown after years of service. Adjusting to civilian life is hard for him. The memories of war and the pain of losing his wife in a tragic accident involving a sand truck are haunting him.

Arjun also struggles with his relationship with his daughter, Shyama, played by Radhikka Madan. She grew up mostly without him and has emotional distance.

Things change when his close friend Prabhakar (Saurabh Shukla) offers him a job at a small security service. This new role slowly pulls Arjun into the dangerous world of illegal sand mining controlled by local criminals.

The town is ruled by powerful figures, including Prince, played by Aditya Rawal, and Babli Didi, played by Mona Singh, who runs the mafia network from inside jail.

When Prince vandalises Arjun’s beloved red gypsy, a car connected to his late wife’s memory, the conflict turns personal. It starts as a job, but soon becomes a fight for dignity and justice.

Raw Setting Adds to the Film’s Mood

One of Subedaar's strengths is its setting. The story takes place in a fictional town surrounded by rugged ravines where lawlessness feels normal.

The dusty locations, narrow roads, and tense atmosphere create a strong backdrop for the story. It feels like a place where criminals run the show, and normal people are forced to stay silent.

The film also has smaller emotional moments that add depth. In one scene, Arjun shares a playful moment with a child, who pretends to shoot him with a toy gun. These quiet scenes help balance the intense action.

Director Suresh Triveni, earlier popular for films like Tumhari Sulu, tries a very different style here. Instead of a light-hearted story, he gives a darker and more grounded action drama.

Anil Kapoor Leads from the Front

The film belongs almost completely to Anil Kapoor. Even at this stage of his career, he performs demanding action scenes with confidence and energy.

His portrayal of Arjun Maurya is restrained and intense. Through expressions and silence, he communicates anger, grief, and regret. Whether it is a quiet emotional scene or a physical fight sequence, Kapoor holds the screen effortlessly.

Radhikka Madan also gives a solid performance as Shyama, playing a daughter who is independent and strong-willed. Her scenes with Kapoor give the film some of its most emotional moments.

Saurabh Shukla plays the loyal friend with warmth and authenticity. Meanwhile, Aditya Rawal’s Prince is unpredictable and arrogant, making him a convincing villain.

Mona Singh appears as Babli Didi, the mastermind controlling the criminal network. Though her role is limited, she attracts a calm and dangerous presence.

Where the Film Stumbles

Despite a strong beginning, Subedaar loses some momentum in the later portions. The story builds tension well during the first half. However, the final act feels slightly stretched.

A few action sequences in the climax appear prolonged, and the narrative starts to drag. Some viewers may also feel the villain’s character becomes repetitive.

The film’s central theme, corruption and power abuse, could have been explored more deeply. Instead, the focus shifts mostly to personal revenge.

Final Verdict: A Watch for Anil Kapoor Fans

Subedaar works best as a gritty action drama led by a commanding central performance. The rough setting, emotional undertones, and strong supporting cast add to the experience.

While the story does not fully live up to its potential, Anil Kapoor’s performance makes the film engaging from start to finish. His intense portrayal of a retired soldier facing a new battle in civilian life is the biggest highlight.

If you enjoy action dramas with strong performances, Subedaar is worth watching, especially to see Anil Kapoor bring raw energy to the role of a battle-scarred soldier.
