Mandaadi Review: This Tamil sports drama takes its viewers into the world of traditional sea boat racing. Although Soori & Suhas lead it under Mathimaran Pugazhendhi’s direction, Mahima Nambiar and Sathyaraj are also there in the supporting roles.

Mandaadi focuses on the lesser-known sporting tradition connected to the coastal areas. This is why it gets a unique start compared to other sports dramas available today. This sporting film closely highlights the two friends’ story as they eventually become rivals due to their bitter history.

Mandaadi movie review: Story

Muthukaali (Soori) and Sattapuli (Suhas) from Kalingapatnam are the main characters of this movie.  They were close friends and excellent boat sailors. Their friendship takes a bitter turn after a fallout.

Their personal disagreements eventually turned into a bigger rivalry. They met after 20 years as they found themselves on opposite sides of the village. Although Muthukaali has walked away from the sport, Sattapuli has developed a strong position in the location. The reason behind their separation forms an important part of the story.

Their old conflict comes back into focus after the boat-racing competition’s return. Personal pride, old memories, and competitive spirit come into focus when an important race approaches.

This basic setup gives the film enough content for the emotional drama. But the question is whether the storyline can make the audience care about the 2 men relationship compared to the boat competition.

First Half Is One Of The Film's Stronger Parts

Good pace is one of the first half’s strengths. The film doesn’t waste time establishing its central characters and conflicts.

Enough attention has been given to Suhas & Soori’s rivalries at the initial stage. Their confrontations create tension before the movie moves towards its action sequences.

The boat-racing sequences are among its biggest attractions. It boosts the theatrical experience by giving the film a unique visual identity. Its interval scene is also engaging because it sets enough anticipation for the 2nd half.

Soori Delivers A Controlled Performance

Soori’s presence is also one of the biggest plus points which should be highlighted in the Mandaadi Tamil movie review. His Muthukaali’s portrayal isn’t completely dependent on loud dialogues.

He uses expressions, body language, and silence to present the character's emotions.  This approach is impressive when his character is dealing with his past.

Soori has also received a few action sequences. He also looks comfortable during the action portion and handles the role with complete confidence. His performance is effective because his character has sporting effort and an emotional side.

Suhas Makes An Impression

Suhas also takes on a challenging role as Sattapuli. He moves away from his softer yet familiar characters as Sattapuli has a darker and more aggressive side.

He gives Sattapuli a strong presence through his dialogue delivery. His chemistry with Soori is one of the main reasons behind the rivalry’s effectiveness. Mandaadi gives him an opportunity to reach the wider Tamil audience.

He also plays the role with confidence and doesn’t look nervous while working with an experienced performer like Soori.

Although Suhas & Soori took the film’s limelight, the supporting cast also contribute heavily even when the film focuses on two leads. Mahima Nambiar becomes a major support during the emotional portions. Sathyaraj also gives his usual screen presence to his role.

Boat Racing Is The Biggest Highlight

Mandaadi’s sporting backdrop is also the most refreshing part.

Sea boat racing is rarely used as the mainstream Indian film subject. The decision to develop a story around the traditional sport gives the film a unique environment. 2 big racing sequences are also present here where the climax sequence stands out.

Appreciation should also be given to S. R. Kathir for his camera work. He captures the boat movement & race scale through wider shots and dynamic angles.

These scenes have been created for the big screen. The required energy has been created through the sound, visuals, and background score.

Mandaadi movie review: Technical Aspects

Director Mathimaran Pugazhendhi deserves a pat on the back for selecting the unusual sporting backdrop. Mandaadi has a unique flavour due to the combination of coastal life, personal rivalry and boat racing. Its screenplay also works best in the initial portion compared to the later part.

G. V. Prakash Kumar's background score also gives energy to the racing & the action scenes while supporting the emotional portions.

S. R. Kathir's cinematography also captures the coastal environment effectively. Enough visual treatment has been given to the boat racing & the climax. Although Pradeep E. Ragav's editing is effective, pacing could be improved with a few scene cuts,

Where Mandaadi Loses Its Grip

Although Mandaadi takes a strong start and has decent racing sequences, the writing loses its grip in the 2nd half. The later portion starts following a similar sports-drama pattern and becomes predictable.

The less effective history between Muthukaali and Sattapuli. Their friendship from 20 years earlier is indeed an interesting part. But the screenplay could have explored their broken relationship with greater depth.

A few more surprising sequences may have made the boat-racing sequence more interesting. Although the race is indeed visually exciting, the sharper writing could have raised the stakes further during these sequences.

Sathyaraj's character also seems underused compared to his presence. Some depth to the supporting characters could make the storyline more engaging.

Mandaadi Movie Review: Final Verdict

Mandaadi has an interesting idea at its centre. A lesser-seen traditional sport is combined here with a long-running rivalry between two former friends. Although Soori gives a confident performance, Suhas also gives a lasting impression as Sattapuli. The story gains weight through their impressive combination.

The film’s biggest strength is its boat racing. Peter Hein's action choreography, S. R. Kathir's visuals, and G. V. Prakash Kumar's score work all elevated these scenes.

The second half doesn’t always match the opening sequence’s impact. Its predictable writing and limited exploration of the leads' emotional history prevent the story from reaching its full potential.

Mandaadi is a nice theatrical sports drama with performances and a unique environment. It is perfect for those who enjoy rural dramas, action, and sports-based stories. They should, however, watch it with minimal expectations.
